The World Hepatitis Alliance

Our vision.... Seeking a world without viral hepatitis B & C.

World Hepatitis Day is coordinated by the World Hepatitis Alliance, a non-governmental organisation that represents approximately 280 hepatitis B and hepatitis C patient groups from around the world.

As a coalition of advocacy groups, the World Hepatitis Alliance is a global voice for the 500 million people worldwide living with chronic viral hepatitis B or C.

Our Mission Statement
The World Hepatitis Alliance provides global leadership and supports action that will halt the death toll and improve the lives of people living with chronic viral hepatitis B and C. Through better awareness, prevention, care, support and access to treatment, our ultimate goal is to work with governments to eradicate these diseases from the planet.

The World Hepatitis Alliance is governed by a representative board drawn from patient groups from seven world regions: Europe, Eastern Mediterranean, North Africa, North America, South America, Australasia and Western Pacific.

Public Health Panel

A Public Health Panel has been set up by the World Hepatitis Alliance to act as an advisory board and expert reference group. This year, the panel members will be supporting the global and country launches of World Hepatitis Day and providing messages of support for the campaign which can be found throughout this website.

Support Around the World

World Hepatitis Day has also been endorsed by some of the most important medical and healthcare groups in the world and the World Hepatitis Alliance looks forward to working with many more organisations in the future.

“The only way to win the fight against chronic viral hepatitis is to join forces.”

Prof Jean-Michel Pawlotsky
Member of the World Hepatitis Alliance Public Health Panel

‘12 Asks for 2012’

In addition to the ‘Am I Number 12?’ campaign, the World Hepatitis Alliance and patient groups around the world are asking national governments to sign up to ‘12 Asks for 2012’.

The ‘12 Asks’ relate to a series of commitments that recognise the impact of the diseases and the importance of adopting measures that address the issue from a public health perspective. The ‘12 Asks’ to governments are a central element of the campaign aimed at setting objectives both internationally and nationally for improvements in health outcomes for patients.

Hepatitis Atlas

In 2008, the World Hepatitis Alliance issued a call to action with the launch of the  Hepatitis Atlas. The Hepatitis Atlas will evolve over time, with the first edition highlighting the kind of data that is needed and demonstrating the extent to which it is lacking in many countries.

One of the main concerns of the World Hepatitis Alliance, and something that the Atlas demonstrates, is the lack of available data on chronic hepatitis B and C. As it stands, even the most recent data from the World Health Organization (WHO) dates back to 1999.  The World Hepatitis Alliance is actively working with the WHO to gather evidence-based information to populate the Hepatitis Atlas.
